The wife of former South African president and philanthropist late Nelson Mandela and veteran politician Winnie Mandela has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree by Makerere University in Uganda for her activism role and outstanding leadership in the freedom struggle of South Africa and the entire continent.

81 year old Mandela was awarded the doctorate degree at the Makerere university’s 68th graduation ceremony which lasted from Tuesday 16th to Friday, 19th of January. The award was collected on her behalf by her niece at the conclusion of the graduation program.
Winnie, who has been tagged ‘mother of the nation’ by South Africans was a part of the numerous women who were arrested for their righteous demonstration against injustice metted out on Africans by pass laws which forced dark skinned individuals to Cary identification documents as a means of control for their movements.
Ugandan president, president Yoweri Museveni in his speech commended her for the efforts her and her family have made towards freedom for Africans.

“The Mandela family were very instrumental in the liberation of South Africa and the entire African continent. They gave their all to Africa and have contributed greatly to the achievement of emancipitation, democracy and some steps towards towards economic integration in the form of SADC. She remains an important figure in the South African society, in history of the liberation struggle not only in South Africa, but in other parts of the world” he said.
Congratulations Winnie Mandela! We Celebrate You!
