People settle for career paths they are not passionate about mostly because of the opportunities attach to them , but after a while some realise they aren’t fulfilled. If you are in a similar situation and you want to pursue your initial dream don’t ever get discouraged by your age, all you need is to believe in yourself and be determined like 92 year old Dorothy Steel who kick started her acting career at 88 and landed a role in a globally loved movie, Black Panther in 2017 at age 91.
In the movie Dorothy acted as a tribal elder who wore Fulani earrings. Though while watching Black Panther you could have assumed she has been working for years in the industry, we are glad to tell you she actually just got started a couple of years ago, at the age of 88.
During a recent interview with Atlanta’s WSB-TV, Steel said “If anyone would have told me I would be an actor, I would’ve said you got to be out of your mind.”
According Dorothy Steel on how she got her role in Black Panther, she said her audition tape was sent into Marvel last year and the response was immediate.
“We sent it in and an hour later they said, “Who is that old lady? We want her,’”
While Steel has a handful of movie credits, Black Panther is [obviously] her largest.
Of the success, Steel said, “It was just amazing, it truly was.” She also explained what it was like to be on the set everyday.
“Chadwick the King. Every day, he would make sure if I was on the set, he would come by and make sure he gave me a big old hug and kiss.”
Steel said she became the grandmother on the set for the movie that she describes as a movement.
“We were one big melting pot of black people and we knew we were doing something that had never been done before. Ya know?” she said.
And in addition to the importance to the Black community, she shared the importance of the role of women in the film.
“We have power and it’s time for us to step up and take over. That’s what we have to do and take over,” she said.
We find this story very inspiring, and we want you to understand that anything you believe in, you will achieve, just stay determined and keep working till it happens. It is is never too late to pursue your dream.
