Nigerian Women’s Bobsled Team Becomes First African Team To Qualify For Olympics

Nigerian women’s bobsled team has just made Africans proud by setting record as the first African team to qualify for the winter Olympics , and at the same time making it the first time Nigeria will be represented at the winter Olympics.

The three member team which consist of Akuoma Omeoga, Seun Adigun and Ngozi Onwumere has just made history as the first to represent Nigeria in the event that will be held in Pyeonchang, South Korea in February next year.

A team which was formed in 2016 became qualified after 5 races held in Utah, Whistler and Calgary.

The qualification is a huge milestone for sports in Nigeria and will help create awareness and opportunities for more sports to be hosted in Nigeria.

Seun Adigun, one of the members started a Go Fund Me campaign late last year to raise $75000 to fund their Olympic bid which was achieved in 11 months.

“Our objective now is to be the best representation of Africa that the winter Olympics have ever witnessed”she said.

Without access to proper training equipment or ice to hone their skills, the members of the Nigerian Women Bobsleigh team who started their journey in less favorable grounds is breaking never before trod grounds. Nigerians both at home and in diaspora have been sending congratulatory messages, thanking them for representing the nation so well.
