Michael Obafemi Becomes First Nigerian Born In 2000s To Play In Premier League

Popular Southampton striker Michael Obafemi emerged the first Nigerian player born in the 2000s to play in the premier league following his first debut match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 21st of January.

The 17 year old Irish-born Nigerian became the second youngest debutante player, although not the first irish-born teenage player to play in the English top flight, a position which is held by Kevin toner, he is the second youngest striker to play in the premier league for Southampton after Luke Shaw.

The 17 year old emotion-laden striker was quite glad and expressed his delight at the news.
“I came in yesterday thinking king I would be playing at the U18s, when the manager said I would be playing instead. I was nervous but the welcome from the supporters was brilliant and the senior guys told me to just relax and prove myself. I want to move on from here and keep working hard. I can’t stop here, this is just the beginning” he said.
