Hello World,
Temmy Balogun’s Blog wishes you a Merry Christmas and a fulfilling new year ahead.
Earlier in March we interviewed a talented Nigerian artiste,Oresegun Olumide who makes hyper realistic painting and today our spotlight is on a creative Nigerian artist who stands out among many others in his field as he creates oustanding artworks using only pen and the most amazing thing is he learnt drawing through self training without any formal artistry education or training.
Relax, take a chill pill and read this excerpt about him…
Oscar Ukonu is a brilliant self-taught Nigerian artist, who uses only a pen to create stunning photorealistic portraits that take him an average of 100 to 120 hours to complete.
Before Oscar gets started on one of his portraits, he studies his subjects face for about two days to “connect with their personality” – and with such brilliant outcomes, who can argue with his methods?
Oscar started drawing when he was nine years old but only landed his first commissioned piece three years ago. It’s been uphill from there though, with over 12,000 followers on Instagram and successful exhibitions around Lagos, Oscar’s work seems to only be getting better (and more appreciated).
Oscar, who only started drawing with
pens two years ago, says he didn’t start using the medium to achieve any sort of acclaim, but that the “steady ballpoint feature” gave him more control than any other tool – including the graphite pencils he started off with.
This is another amazing talent from Africa, we are always happy to celebrate unique talents like this.
