Meet Nike Majekodunmi, Nigerian Entrepreneur Who Turned Side-hustle Into Thriving Bakery Business

Nigerian entrepreneur, Nike Majekodunmi is the founder of one of the most popular cake stores in Nigeria, Nuts About Cakes, a side hustle she turned into a thriving bakery.

She is an ambitious businesswoman who knows what it takes to be the best and she isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

The ‘Nuts About Cakes’ bakery specializes in freshly baked cakes, pastries and bread for both corporate and retail clients; with the concept of creating fun and tasty, yet superior quality snacks.

Nike got her Bachelors Degree from the University of Reading in Economic and Political Sociology in 2002. She had her Master’s Degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham in 2003.

Nike Majekodunmi worked as an E-Business Consultant at Nextzon Consultant Services between 2005 – 2006.

Nuts About Cakes was founded in 2007 when Nike Majekodunmi turned her passion for baking into a business. While in management consulting, she decided it was time to leave a job she liked and face the life she loves.

When an acquaintance tasted Nike Majekodunmi’s cookies for the first time in 2006 at a housewarming party in Lagos, Nigeria, he immediately enquired about the selling price.

Majekodunmi, an e-business management consultant at the time, felt a bit offended that he would think baking was “all she did for a living”. Yet, he persisted and became her first client.

Shortly thereafter, the same man placed a large order for his company’s Christmas party. “That is when I finally admitted I also bake, with regular orders coming in,” she said.

Her products became increasingly popular. “For a while, I was a baker by night, e-business consultant by day.” It was around this time that she got married, and when the couple wanted to start a family, she chose to leave her day job and focus on the baking. The idea of the flexibility, that she could work from home and have time to spend with the kids appealed to her.

The business was formerly known as Nuts bout Nuts specializing in cookies, brownies, and muffins. Customers fell in love, word got out and requests for cakes started rolling in.

Over the years, the business has grown from a bakery with just a few products, to one producing a wide variety of products, which has about 5 stores in Lagos and has still been able to hold on to its original ethos of using only the finest ingredients in baking.
