Meet Anna Phosa, One Of Africa’s Successful Pig Farmers

If we are to point out one of the individuals who stayed strong in the midst of challenges  and thrived to become successful in her choice business  Anna Phosa will top our list.

Anna is one of Africa’s most successful business Women as she has been often referred to as the ‘Celebrity Pig Farmer’.
Her childhood was not a pleasant one with the death of her father at the early stage of her life which caused her to leave school due to financial strain but she didn’t allow that to pull down her dream to be successful. She struggled to raise capital and grow the business.
Phosa started her first pig farm in Soweto in 2004 with $100 which was from her personal savings as she started with four small pigs. She helped herself by reading up on books on pig farming and working with other farmers. She started supplying meats to the local markets which increased her pigs.

Anna Phosa approached Vereeniging Meat Packers in 2005 after reaching an agreement to start supplying meat to the company.
Her breakthrough came about when she was given a contract by a South African retail supermarket giant, Pick n’ Pay to supply 10 pigs to its stores every week in 2008. And in 2010, she signed another contract, a five year contract with the same company to supply 100 pigs per week for R25 million.
