Born in 1977, Gbenga Sesan grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, and showed an early interest in technology.
He studied electronic engineering at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria and went on to obtain a master’s degree in information systems from the University of East London.
In the early 2000s, Gbenga Sesan worked for several technology companies in Nigeria, including the Nigerian Communications Commission, where he played a key role in the development of Nigeria’s first-ever National ICT Policy.
He also worked for MTech, a leading technology consulting firm, where he led several high-profile projects for clients in the public and private sectors.

In 2007, Gbenga Sesan founded Paradigm Initiative, which initially focused on training young people in Nigeria on how to use the internet for social change. Over the years, the organization has expanded its reach to other African countries, including Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia, and has worked with over 50,000 young people.
Under Gbenga Sesan’s leadership, Paradigm Initiative has also been involved in advocacy efforts aimed at promoting digital rights and freedoms in Africa.
His central project, the Ayeta Toolkit for African digital rights activists developed under the Paradigm Initiative, goes some ways to bridging this gap by safeguarding digital rights defenders across the global South.
The organization has been particularly vocal in its opposition to internet shutdowns and other forms of digital censorship, and has advocated for more inclusive policies that take into account the needs of marginalized communities.
Gbenga Sesan has received several awards and recognitions for his work, including being named a TED Fellow in 2007 and a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader in 2013. He has also served on several advisory boards, including the United Nations Secretary General’s High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation.
