This Monday, our mancrush is one who embodies talent, passion and character with a top notch sense of style and finesse.
Desmond Olushola Elliot is an actor, filmmaker and a legislator in Lagos state, Nigeria. He was born to a Yoruba father of the olowogbowo clan of Lagos Island, and mother from Illah in Oshimill.
Desmond had his primary education at The Air Force primary school and later attended St John’s college, both in Jos.
In 2003 he graduated from Lagos State University where he studied Economics.
He discovered his passion for acting after a ‘waka pass role. Now he is one of Nollywood’s leading actors, having appeared in over two hundred films including Men Who Cheat, Yahoo Millionaire and Atlanta. Today, his impact in the country’s movie industry (Nollywood) cannot be overemphasized.
Film production and directing began for Desmond in 2008, when he co-produced and co-directed the movie called “reloaded”. The movie received three nominations at the African Movie Academy Awards in 2009 and 2010 and Eliot also got a nomination at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards (NEA) in 2010.
Desmond is an A List Actor and Producer in the Nigerian movie industry and a household name in the country and an inspiration for a lot of young acts in the industry.
Over the years, the actor has always felt the need to impact on people’s lives by bringing positive change and this is why he established the Desmond Elliot Foundation, a charitable non-government and non-profit making organisation which has worked in partnership with an international organization-WaterAid in various capacities to provide clean and safe water in some communities as well as being a member of the Sickle Cell Foundation where he helps to seek for funds to facilitate the work of the foundation in educating the society on Sickle Cell Anaemia. Desmond hasn’t stopped influencing lives positively with his philanthropic moves and schemes to better the life of people in his community.
In September 2014, Elliot declared his intentions to run for Lagos State House of Assembly under the All Progressives Congress. He contested and won the Surulere Constituency in the 11 April 2015 Nigerian General Elections. Desmond has always been seen as a man of the people not just for his kindness but his attitude towards humanity.
In an interview with Temmy Balogun Media, he explains how people come to him for help and he would have loved to solve everyone’s problem but finance has been a major setback. He said “An instance is my present situation, am financially tight right now but that didn’t stop people from coming in. Though am happy to see them, so I help in my little way even if it’s not financial.
My daily prayer to God always is; when people come especially those within my constituent, I want them to leave my office smiling , regardless of whatever problem they bring to me, I want them to walk out of my door with a ray of hope , believing am going to attend to them, assist them or do something about their situation. This should be the mindset of any leader within the government sector, if otherwise you are not ready for this job.
This is because as a leader in the government sector, you owe it to people, they were the one that sent you here , they are your parents, so you need to serve them, but for others in the private sector which is capitalist society, it’s a thing of choice , you can do whatever you know it’s best to do.”
Nonetheless, his kindness to the community and responsibilities to see people live a better life has been key to his success over the years.
Today we at Temmy Balogun Media celebrates a legend in movies, great public servant and an epitome of greatness Hon. Desmond Eliot.
