Lauren Underwood achieved a great on Tuesday, March 20,2018, when she beat six moderately aged white men to win the Democratic Primary in the fourteenth District of Illinois.
The district is firmly Republican, overwhelmingly white and covers Chicago’s external ring rural areas and exurbs. Lauren is the first woman to get her party’s selection in the district’s history.
The 31 year old faces Representative Randy Hultgren, who is seeking for a fifth term in November. Hultgren ran unopposed in Tuesday’s Republican essential. According to DailyKos Elections, Hultgren has won re-election by agreeable edges since redistricting in 2011. President Trump just won the area by around four percentage points in 2016.
Underwood is the youngest Black woman running for Congress in 2018. Should she win the 2018 general mid-term elections in November, she will be the first woman and 5th Democrat to win the seat in the district’s 145-year history.
