Makeup used to be a “hobby” and not a professional career, no one ever took this has a career path until Tara Fela Durotoye sighted this as an opportunity and grabbed it!
In the western world, beauty products and usage have been big deals for decades but Nigerians only buy from the international products shipped into Africa until Tara discovered the need to have top quality indigenous makeup products that work for Nigerians, this inspired her to start the House of Tara International.
Tara Fela Durotoye is a pioneer in the beauty product, usage, bridal makeup and has risen to a pinnacle in the makeup and beauty industry. She is a role model to new and existing makeup and beauty artists and producers, as she mentors diverse young female entrepreneurs in Africa.
Tara Fela-Durotoye started her entrepreneurial journey at age 20 with House of Tara International in 1998, she was still an undergraduate then. She studied law but also attended a vocation skill training at Charles Fox where she learnt how to be a makeup artist.
Currently, House of Tara International is a company with different streams of beauty activities like The Make-up Studio, The Make-up Academy, and the Tara product line which comprises of product lines and makeup kits.
They also specialize in the distribution, retail, and channel management of cosmetics. From her story, she disclosed that she caught the vision to become an entrepreneur from a speech she listened to at secondary school and her decision to go into the beauty industry was inspired by her stepmother who was very fashionable.
After years of hard work, she got her big break out that brought her to limelight when she featured in the Ovation Magazine as the make-up artist for Jumobi Adegbesan’s wedding to Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD).
House of Tara has since then been on a fast-paced growth since its inception with branches in Senegal, Benin, and Ghana.
She has lots of awards and recognition to her name like Creative Business Award of the Year, Success Digest in 2008, Best Innovative Idea by Nigerian Event Awards in 2011, Forbes List: 20 Young Power Women in Africa in 2013, the award of excellence for Social Impact and Job Creation 2019, a National Recognition by the Vice President of Nigeria and so many others.
