How Regina Honu is Empowering Women and Bridging Gender Gap in Technology Industry

Regina Honu is a remarkable entrepreneur, social activist, and advocate for women’s empowerment in the technology industry. She is the founder and CEO of Soronko Solutions, a technology company based in Ghana, West Africa. 

She opened Soronko Academy, the first coding and Human-centered design school for children and young adults in West Africa.

Honu started the Tech Needs Girls Ghana movement which aims to train and educate more Ghanaian girls into studying technology- related courses. The movement is noted for teaching girls how to code.

Regina Honu has dedicated her work to bridging the gender gap in technology and empowering women through education, training, and mentorship.

One of Regina Honu’s notable initiatives is the “Tech Needs Girls” program, which she launched in 2013. The program aims to equip young girls with digital skills, inspire them to pursue careers in technology, and challenge gender stereotypes that discourage girls from entering the field. Through workshops, mentorship, and hands-on training, Tech Needs Girls has reached thousands of girls across Ghana, providing them with opportunities to learn coding, problem-solving, and other technical skills.

Regina Honu also established the Soronko Academy, a coding and human-centered design school in Accra, Ghana. The academy offers training programs for both women and men, with a special focus on encouraging women to enter and excel in the tech industry. By providing accessible and practical education, the academy equips students with the skills necessary for employment in the technology sector and encourages entrepreneurship.

In addition to her educational initiatives, Regina Honu actively advocates for gender equality and empowerment in the workplace. She has spoken at numerous conferences and events, both locally and internationally, highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. Honu has received multiple awards, including being named by CNN as one of the 12 inspirational women who rock STEM. She was also named as one of the six women making an impact in Tech in Africa and one of the ten female entrepreneurs to watch in emerging economies.

She was named one of BBC’s 100 most inspiring and influential women in 2017 and has been featured in various international media outlets. 

Through her dedication, passion, and determination, Regina Honu continues to challenge stereotypes, empower women, and create a more inclusive and equitable technology industry in Ghana and beyond.
