Ghana To Construct First Eco-medical Village In Africa

Ghana has made an amazing move in the medical field , the first Africa Ecomedical Village (EMV) Limited which will be the first of it’s kind in Africa.

The EMV was launched, and once completed, it will provide quality health care to Ghanaians and other ECOWAS countries. The state-of-the-art facility, based on a public-private partnership, will be built in Achimota, Accra with some areas of specialization that will be located throughout the ECOWAS sub-region.

The project envisages the creation of specialized centers of excellence in each of the ECOWAS member countries to treat and manage specific diseases.

The first phase of this $ 476 million project is expected to include the establishment of a referral center for various diseases, research facilities, sports medicine, disaster management center and hospital for women and children.

Peter Ahiekpor, founder and CEO of EMV, said he designed the project because Ghanaians were traveling outside the country for medical examinations, funds that would have remained in Ghana if large Medical facilities were available.

He confides that his own experiences of traveling to the UK every six months for a medical examination, coupled with his findings that Nigeria spent $ 26 million a month seeking medical services in India, urged him to carry out the project.

In addition, the ecomedical village whose construction is expected to last 26 months will also put Ghana on the map as a destination for global health tourism, believes the director of the EMV.

According to estimates, the project will create about 5,000 jobs for more than $ 900 million in tax revenue for the country.

Kinsley Aboagye Gyedu, Deputy Minister of Health, said there is nothing that suits the Ministry to the recognition of the private sector as a partner in providing quality health care.
The project has been fully endorsed by the government, which is determined to accompany and monitor the work.
