IrokoTv was founded by Iroko partners , Jason Njoku and Bastian Gotter in December 2010 and launched 1, December, 2011, which had its headquarters in London, United Kingdom, as it is the world’s largest legal digital distributor of African movies.
Jason Njoku, CEO and Bastian Gotter now COO, were students together at the university of Manchester.
While living in London, Iroko’s co-founder, Jason Njoku, realised how popular African movies had become and despite a growing worldwide demand, there were no legal platform to watch movies from his home country., this was why the thought of Irokotv crosses his mind.
Jason returned to Nigeria in 2010 to build relationships with local movie producers and purchase content rights for his new startup, IrokoTV,
Cash was tight, and starting this business would have been impossible without the £90,000 contribution of Jason’s friend and business partner, Sebastian.
In January 2016, IrokoTV raised $19 million in additional funding to expand its business into Francophone countries in Africa.
Its investors include Tiger Global, a New York-based private equity firm, and Investment AB Kinnevik, a Swedish venture capital investor.
Irokotv works with most of Nollywood’s top film production houses and purchases the exclusive online licenses to their films, In an attempt to distribute Nollywood films to a global audience.
The company’s audience is the top five countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, (Germany) and Italy.
All in all, Jason has been able to successfully raise significant amounts of capital through investments to grow a company which has now become very successful as it is termed “Netflix of Africa” by Forbes.
Njoku is often recognized in the media as a pioneer in African tech start ups, as he was voted by Black Enterprise Magazine, in 2012 as one of London’s top black men of power.
Jason is happily married with kids. He married Mary Njoku, a British born Nigerian entrepreneur who is also an actress on 18 August 2012, in front of family, friends and colleagues.
