Content Marketing: Five Things To Do Before You Start

Creating content for marketing purposes does not have to be difficult if you understand certain basic principles; in today’s article we will be sharing five things you need to do before you begin creating content for marketing. 

Content marketing has proven to be one of the most effective ways to attract customers, keep existing customers and even engage one’s audience. As easy as it sounds, it can be unfruitful if not done the right way. 

The question that should be asked would be, are your contents really for your audience? If the answer to this question is no, then, you should go back to the drawing board. Reassess the situation and do right. 

Here are five things you should do before you start creating creating marketing contents:

  1. Have a Goal: Are you creating content for “creating” sake? Determine your goal for writing. If there is no goal, then you should not be creating the contents in the first place. 

For your content to have an effect on the reader, it must be targeted and well thought out content such that whoever is reading it finds it valuable. 

  1. Have a strategy: You do not want to be like that hunter who enters into a forest and begins to shoot at everything- the trees, the birds, the air, etc. You want to have a target and a strategy. After answering the “why” you are creating the contents, you need to answer the “HOW”. Having a strategy answers the “HOW” question. You do not want to shoot aimlessly. 
  1. Define your audience: Who are you writing for? Knowing who your contents are targeted at, makes it easier for you to write for them. This way, you can do more and be sure to get the results. 
  1. Find your competitors: Research on your competitors. Check out what they are currently doing, what they are doing differently and how you can adopt some of their working strategies. Researching them will prepare your mind on what is working in the industry and you can also improve on yours. 
  1. Do not neglect keyword research: Run an internet search on keywords used by your target audience and competitions.

 You can do this by checking for the volume of keywords that are relevant to your niche. This way, you know what exactly to write about.
